Interview with a Student Pastor: Aaron Holloway

Posted by: in Interviews on September 3rd

Our next interview is with Aaron Holloway from Lafayette, Louisiana. He is the student pastor of Kinetic Student Ministries at the Pentecostals of Lafayette.

InsideOut: What do you get when you go to Starbucks? Aaron Holloway: Those frozen coffee things!
IO: If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?
AH: Teleportation! I feel like there are so many places I need to be, and I could save so much time if I could just teleport! Sigh.

IO: What’s your youth group’s favorite restaurant?
AH: Little Caesars Pizza in our building:)

IO: Xbox 360 or PS3?
AH: PS3

IO: Mac or PC?
AH: Mac

IO: What has been your most useful resource for student ministry?
AH: My pastor

IO: What’s your favorite scripture?
AH: Daniel 1:8. I love the Book of Daniel!

IO: What’s your favorite moment as a student pastor so far?
AH: It’s impossible to narrow it down to one favorite. I had the privilege of seeing a young man preach his first sermon in one of our Wednesday night Core services. This very man made several attempts at suicide just a year earlier. I adore those moments when a student hears a lesson and they say “Ooooooohhhh, I get it now!” Seeing students grow is addicting.

We saw a girl we had been working with for two years get the Holy Ghost at NAYC this year. Seeing a student get the Holy Ghost and being baptized in Jesus’ name is the most soul-moving thing I have ever witnessed. I love all these moments, and they drive me on a daily basis.

IO: Kinetic has created three different events each month: Connect, Converge, and Core. Explain the purpose behind each of these.
AH: Each month we are trying to incorporate an event that focuses outward, upward, and inward. Connect is our outward event where we go play paintball, hangout at the mall, etc. We usually have a lot of visitors at these events so we use this opportunity to connect with them. Our goal is to plug them into converge.

Converge is our upward event where we create an anointed atmosphere for those we connected with. This event is set up like a youth rally, so we treat it as such, with anointed singing and evangelistic preaching. Our main goal in Converge is to see Connect students filled with the Holy Ghost and expose them to Apostolic anointing. This event is always followed up with free food, connect stations, games, and plenty of staff. Our next step is to plug them into Core.

Core is the inward portion of our structure. Core happens every Wednesday night at 7:17 p.m. We focus solely on discipleship by interpreting our core beliefs into series that will interest the students. From there, we rinse and repeat the entire process over again, constantly moving, reaching, connecting, and discipling.

IO: What’s the most recent success story in your student ministry?
AH: Actually last night! We had our first Converge event where we had seventy in attendance, fifty of whom were students. It’s something special for a student pastor who started with an average of five to eight each week to see seventy in your building!

I was humbled beyond belief to see students who are normally very quiet invite multiple friends. Then I saw those friends in the
altar weeping their eyes out, responding to the presence of God for—most likely—the first time.
