Uplink: From the Illinois District

The first transatlantic telegraph cable was completely laid out in 1866, made of 340,500 miles of copper and iron wire. It was designed to stretch 2,876.95 miles along the ocean floor. Once that cable was in place, you could use electrical impulses and signal code to send any message you wanted to the other side of the world.

On May 4, 2013, thousands of young people who pray and fast laid out a communication plan of their own called UPLINK. They sent out spiritual impulses using sacrificial code to send forth our message to Heaven. UPLINK is the day students link up all across America to call out and seek God’s face through prayer and fasting. It’s our day to bind together and send out our beckon, getting the attention of both Heaven and Hell.

In Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, our group of young people—the Remix—took our communication system into our city at midnight. When Jesus said, “Go ye into all the world,” He wasn’t just speaking to missionaries and evangelists. That word was for all of us. Where you live, where we attend school, where you are called to be at this certain season in life is where you are to “go”.

We took that message into our city on a prayer journey that led us right to where our students wage their war—their schools. At every stop from Clinton Junior/Senior High School to Heyworth Junior/Senior High School; from Normal West High School to Normal Community Junior High; and from Bloomington High School to Parkside Junior High, we walked to the front of the school, calling on the name of Jesus for every person who stepped foot on that campus and the campuses across our nation. When we link our prayers and your prayers together, we will see an outpouring of the Holy Spirit amongst our generation.

In 2 Chronicles 7:14, we read, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” You are the called! You are to be the humble! You are the prayer warrior and the ones who seek His face! To see our nation mercifully saved and to see your land and schools healed, there has to be a constant communication between you and your Savior.

A day set apart on the first Saturday of May can never alone break every chain or halt every plan of the enemy. You have to have a daily prayer life and a commitment to fasting. I tell my students all the time that I could never have a true and real relationship with my wife if we didn’t communicate on a daily basis and if we didn’t sacrifice part of ourselves for one another. I need to hear her, and she needs to hear me. It works the same way with Jesus. He needs to hear from us, and we need to hear from Him.

As a human race, we are hardwired with the impulse to share our thoughts and ideas and desire to know we’ve been heard. It’s a part of our need for community. That’s why we are constantly sending out signals and signs, and it’s why we look for them in others—we are hoping for connection. With all our communication technology, no invention is as effective as the sound of the human voice. When we hear the human voice, we instinctively want to listen because the human voice resonates differently from anything else in this world. That transatlantic telegraph cable took twelve years to complete from beginning to end, but it only functioned correctly for three weeks and was destroyed the following month when excessive voltage was applied trying to achieve faster operation.

We have our own connection. It’s one that can never be broken when we simply gather two or three together in Jesus’ name and agree that His will be done! Imagine what Jesus Christ can do when we as a nation of believers “link” our voices together for His namesake!
