The Other Call: Wisdom

Posted by: in Hyphen on September 13th

I don’t have any fancy words for you today. No humorous remarks or catchy phrases. But I do want you to pay close attention to the words of this article; listen and absorb the message that rests among these lines. Listen carefully because there’s more than one calling each of us needs to hear and answer—the call of wisdom.

“Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?”(Proverbs 1:20-22 ).

In all of our growing and transitioning through life’s paths, we face so much chatter and noise from the outside, especially our own ideas and plans. As we grow older and gain new life experiences—good or bad—we learn, we develop, we understand things a little differently than before. It seems like after we’ve accomplished some of our goals and faced a few trials along the way, we think we know it all. We’re adults now, so obviously we know what we’re doing. Unfortunately, that foolish and simple mindset is the beginning of way too many downfalls. We don’t always know the best way to go or decision to make. Our way is not always the right way, and honestly, it’s typically not the right way. We need to realize we do not know everything. Wisdom begins with the recognition of a personal lack of knowledge and understanding.

But don’t despair. We need to seek God’s wisdom. In all our searching and planning our lives, wisdom is a necessity. One is never too old or too young to begin seeking wisdom, and I would say that now is the most important time for young adults to seek God’s perfect wisdom. Seeking wisdom will do nothing but add value to your life, your thinking, your relationships, and definitely your decisions.

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting, get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many” (Proverbs 4:7-10).

See, I told you. Wisdom will only add value to your life. There’s nothing to lose. So, on a more practical level, I think it’s pretty nifty how it works out that there are roughly thirty-one days to a month and there are thirty-one chapters of Proverbs. I’m not saying this was planned in any way, but it’s definitely a convenient coincidence–one chapter of Proverbs for each day of the month. I challenge you. I dare you. Yea, I double-dog dare you to answer the other call, and in all of your getting, gaining, and earning, work diligently to seek and get God’s perfect wisdom and understanding.

P.S. It’s free!
