2018 Youth Week: This Is That

Have you ever had to wait a long time for something special you knew was coming? Most of us are familiar with the excitement that builds up before Christmas. Maybe you couldn’t wait to open that special gift you knew was under the tree. (Hopefully you didn’t sneak a peek.) Maybe it was a family trip. And what kid doesn’t look forward to summer vacation?

It’s always nice when we know the exact day those special moments will arrive. We’ve got them circled on the calendar. The excitement builds with every second that passes. We let out a whoop when they finally arrive. The long-awaited moment is here!

Yes, we’re using the David story again. I can image what you’re thinking, “I already know about David.” My assumption of your thoughts comes from the embarrassing fact that I, too, experienced those words flashing across my mind as I read the subject for this year’s youth week series. David is the role model for every praise and worship leader in Pentecost. He is the example for leaders, servants, and basically anyone. Everyone knows about the little shepherd and the big giant. The whole sling and stones scenario is the staple of any skilled Sunday school teacher’s arsenal. If you’ve even strummed the guitar once with the purpose of playing in church, you will have someone direct you to the “best songwriter in history”. Count on it. When it comes to the church, David can be found everywhere.

The Declaration of Independence. The Bill of Rights. The Gettysburg Address. Roosevelt’s stirring speeches to radio audiences across the United States. Reagan standing before the Berlin Wall.

All of these are stirring masterpieces of both the written and spoken word. To hear them recited or to read them in text form conjures up some of our deepest feelings of what it means to be American. We are what we are because of the greatness of men who were determined to be trailblazers—to carve out a nation that was governed by its own people. At the epicenter of the explosion of our culture and ideals is the refrain of “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Yet, that very pursuit was impossible for a large segment of our culture.
